We're still home - the fire situation is looking better tonight, but I don't want to jinx it!
The Zaca Wildfire is still burning out of control, but the action seems to be moving east away from us into the Dick Smith Wilderness area behind Little Pine Mountain. That's a huge rugged wilderness area, and the Forest Service doesn't expect containment until September. Damn - that's when our fire season really starts! (San Marcos Pass, 4 August 2007)
We had an interesting day expecting evacuation orders at any moment. It's a good exercise to look at all your stuff and decide what's REALLY important: of course my camera; my 500 GB external hardrive with all my photos and writing and music; my vintage guitar and grandpa's fiddle; a box of important papers and family photos; Julie has her own stuff; a travel cage ready for our cat; some clothes and sleeping bags and bathroom stuff... With time to kill, I added a dozen old natural history books I wouldn't know how to replace, and I still haven't finished the last Harry Potter book. Our important stuff is all ready to go piled up on the porch. I'm sure it won't fill the pickup truck.
The white cloud-tops of the smoke plumes raise some stumpers. Why are they shaped like nuclear bomb mushroom clouds? Why do the plumes of dingy smoke become pure white cumulus thunderhead clouds on top? There should be a name for these clouds - I call them FIREHEADS.

Glad to hear that conditions have improved for your area. Hope that you won't have to evacuate..... hard to believe that the fire won't be contained until September. Must be very nerve wracking! take care, my friend!

Ever since you put up the last pic I've been worried for you, so I'm so pleased to hear things have improved a little. It's worrying that it will take two months to control the fire, but I see the countryside is fairly inaccessible. I also have been thinking about what I would take in a similar situation (we have wildfires here in Spain, too, but not as bad as yours) and have a similar list to you, but the two cats are priority.
Best wishes, Patsy

In the previous pic it seemed like that was real cloud...
Well, good luck to you, whatever happens about that fire...
