I found this native Dusky-Footed Wood Rat (Neotoma fuscipes) along the side of East Camino Cielo road today. The unfortunate rat was still frisky, but it was dragging its hind legs like its back was broken, no doubt by a passing car. Usually these critters are nocturnal. I wonder what it was doing out in the daytime? (San Marcos Pass, 5 February 2012)
I wondered whether to take it home, but I had no box, and I figured it will soon become a welcome meal for some hungry fox or hawk or owl. I let it be.
You can see its white feet and long "vibrissae" or whiskers, which are specialized hairs to feel rather than see. These rats build large nests from piles of sticks. I'm shocked that I can't find a photo of a nest, but I'll fix that tomorrow. The rats can move into houses too - we've had some trouble with that at home!
