This is the oldest of the three produce markets currently on Bleecker Street. I never noticed its name until I snapped this photo. When I moved here, old neighborhood denizens taught me to call it the Portuguese Market though I have no idea why. In addition to the fruit and vegetables, they specialize in Italian ingredients and canned goods along with such difficult-to-find items as dried codfish and a wide variety of shelled and unshelled nuts. In the spring, it is the only place within two miles to buy tomato and basil plants for the garden.

I love Bleeker Street. As a matter of fact, I love all of Manhattan below 10th Street. What you can discover in the little streets that fold in on one another is a NYC that no longer exists but is kept alive in the fact that it is still there -- thoughthe folks who dwell there and visit there are different..

There was a large influx of Portugesse to the neighbohood in the early 70`s and they opened some of the best deli/markets in neighborhood just as the Italian element became less dominant. This is a good, I`d say, 10 years before the Korean grocery becamea staple of so many neighborhoods.

War is the plague that human beings bring upon themselves. It is also a plague we might be able to end. On any given day since you and I were born, some part of the world has been at war–in 2003 the total number of open conflicts was thirty. In the twentieth century at least 108 million people died in wars. Of the 20 largest military budgets on earth, 14 belong to developing countries. The United States spends more on its military than the next 16 countries combined
