This is the oldest of the three produce markets currently on Bleecker Street. I never noticed its name until I snapped this photo. When I moved here, old neighborhood denizens taught me to call it the Portuguese Market though I have no idea why. In addition to the fruit and vegetables, they specialize in Italian ingredients and canned goods along with such difficult-to-find items as dried codfish and a wide variety of shelled and unshelled nuts. In the spring, it is the only place within two miles to buy tomato and basil plants for the garden.

I love Bleeker Street. As a matter of fact, I love all of Manhattan below 10th Street. What you can discover in the little streets that fold in on one another is a NYC that no longer exists but is kept alive in the fact that it is still there -- thoughthe folks who dwell there and visit there are different..

There was a large influx of Portugesse to the neighbohood in the early 70`s and they opened some of the best deli/markets in neighborhood just as the Italian element became less dominant. This is a good, I`d say, 10 years before the Korean grocery becamea staple of so many neighborhoods.
