Carmen Hernández nació en Ólvega, Castilla y León(España), aunque de muy pequeña se trasladó con su familia a Tudela, Navarra, donde pasó la mayor parte de su infancia y juventud. Es licenciada en química y fundadora junto a Kiko Argüello del Camino Neocatecumenal, itinerario de formación católica y de evangelización.

Carmen Hernández estudió la licenciatura en Química en Madrid. Tras licenciarse, decide dedicarse a contribuir a la misión de la Iglesia Católica y se retira al Instituto de Misioneras de Cristo Jesús.
Tras una estancia en dicho instituto, obtiene la licenciatura en Teología.
En los años 60, bajo la influencia del Concilio Vaticano II, decide dedicarse a la misión entre los pobres y a los marginados, según había aprendido en el Instituto de Misioneras de Cristo Jesús.
Junto con Kiko Argüello, ambos personas de clase burguesa, deciden irse a vivir con los pobres de las chabolas a los márgenes de Madrid, en Palomeras Altas guiados, según ellos, por las teorías de Charles de Foucauld y de la propia Iglesia Católica.
Esa convivencia entre las chabolas de Palomeras Altas da vida a una experiencia de evangelización que tomará en los años 70 el nombre de Camino neocatecumenal.
Los primeros núcleos de este camino se formaron en torno a Madrid. Sucesivamente se extendieron fuera de la capital española. Actualmente, según datos oficiales, está presente en más de 900 diócesis del mundo, con unos 17.000 comunidades en 6.000 parroquias.

En el ámbito de EL Camino Neocatecumenal, el papel de Hernández, como el de Argüello, representa un nuevo e inesperado, para las expectativas del Concilio Vaticano II, tipo de mujer y de hombre creyentes que, manteniéndose seglares, es decir, sin profesar por medio de unos votos la pertenencia a una orden religiosa, ocupan un papel relevante y dirigente dentro de la Iglesia Católica. Este papel dirigente de una mujer seglar dentro de la Iglesia Católica está moderado, en el caso de El Camino, por la pertenencia a un denominado equipo coordinador formado por un hombre, una mujer y un presbítero (Argüello, Hernández, Pezzi como dirigentes del movimiento fundado por los dos primeros).

Together with Kiko Argüello, both you present of bourgeois class, they decide to be going to be lived by the poor of the shanties to the margins of Madrid, in holding a permit Palomeras Altas, according to them, for the theories of Charles de Foucauld and of the own(proper) Catholic Church.
This living together between(among) Palomeras Altas's shanties gives life to an experience of evangelización that will take in the 70s the name of Way neocatecumenal.

The first cores(nucleuses) of this way were formed(trained) concerning(around) Madrid. Successively they spread out of the Spanish capital.
