Nancy Savoca's "Dogfight" is one of the sweetest, most touching romances of the decade. An important film that deserves to be seen, and includes two of the best performances of the 90's.
Set in the charming San Francisco in 1963, a group of marines, ready to ship out and eventually end up in Vietnam, stage a dogfight in San Francisco, the idea being for each marine to try and find the ugliest girl he can, the winner walking away with a cash prize. River Phoenix finds the homely waitress Lili Taylor, an introverted young woman who hides behind frumpy clothes and listens to Bob Dylan, Joan Baez with a great passion for everything that encompasses life. Birdlace asks her to come to the party and she agrees to it, not believing that someone would actually be interested in her. Birdlace realizes Rose isnt actually ugly, but its the best he can do. She then realizes what is going on, in a very powerful scene she attacks the young man and walks out heartbroken. But he follows her home, apologizes awkwardly, but in a sincere way and she agrees to give him a second chance and just talk. They begin a conversation that leads to an evening on the town. We get to know the two of them as people in the remarkably romantic context of the early Sixties. By trying to be about so little, telling a simple fragile romantic story, similar to the stucture of "Before Sunrise", Dogfight is about so much -- war and peace, love and romance, cultural myths. Just Brilliant, in every sense of the word.

Já na festa, Rose finalmente percebe o que está acontecendo e em uma forte cena, ela ataca o jovem rapaz e vai embora com o coração partido. Birdlace a segue até em casa, pede desculpa de uma maneira um pouco esquisita, mas sincera. Ela decide dar a ele uma segunda chance e conversar. A conversa gera uma noite na cidade. Onde temos a oportunidade de conhecer os personagens da maneira mais memorável e nostalgica do início dos anos 60. Mesmo com um contexto simples e pequeno de um frágil romance, na mesma estrutura de "Antes do Amanhecer", Apostando no Amor envolve muito mais Guerra e paz, amor e romance, mitos culturais. Particulamente um dos meus filmes preferidos, não apenas do River, mas de todos os tempos MESMO. Magnífico, brilhante em toda sua simplicidade e pura beleza.

Oh, eu decididamente preciso fazer uma sessão dos filmes do River, meu, conheço poucos ;( mas tbm, eu nasci em noventa e acabou que vi poucos filmes dessa época pra baixo :(
