Explicação: Como pode uma aurora aparecer assim tão perto do chão? A imagem acima não é a de uma aurora, mas pilares de luz próximos, um fenômeno local que pode parecer distante. Na maior parte do planeta, um observador sortudo pode ver um pilar solar, uma coluna de luz aparecendo se estendendo por sobre o Sol, causado por cristais planos de gelo flutuantes refletindo a luz do Sol na alta atmosfera. Normalmente estes cristais de gelo evaporam-se antes de chegar ao chão. Durante temperaturas congelantes, todavia, cristais planos de gelo flutuantes podem se formar perto do solo sob a forma de uma leve neve, algumas vezes chamadas de neblina de cristal. Estes cristais de gelo podem refletir luz do solo em colunas como um pilar solar. Na imagem acima, as luzes coloridas causando os pilares de luz cercam um rinque de patinação no gelo em Fairbanks, Alasca.
