The Basilica's Ombrellino

The conopaeum (aka umbraculum, ombrellino, or pavillion) is the other distinguishing feature of a basilica. Resembling a partially opened umbrella, it is always made of silk using the papal colors of red and gold terminating in a ball surmounted by a Latin cross.

Both the conopoeum and the tintinabulum (previous photo) were used in ancient Rome to announce the arrival of the Pope (the Bishop of Rome) at one of his churches in Rome.

The pavillion and crossed keys are used in the heraldic arms of a basilica: See http://www.fotolog.com/cybermonk/9838722

    Texture

    What is texture?
Texture goes beyond mere pattern or form into something more complex and organic that you could touch, feel and maybe even identify with your eyes closed if your hand were big or small enough. These are visual representations of a non-visual sense: touch.
