this is the first of some new characters/icons/symbols/logos/whatevers I`m working on.
They`re called "Depressed Monkeys", even though they are not monkeys (monkeys have five limbs, these have four, so more like apes or humans) and they`re not exactly "depressed". What they are is an expression of how I feel during the winter time.
All I want to do is hide in my cave, stay away from people.
I stay awake all night drawing and painting, trawling the streets, and end up sleeping all day, missing most of the few daylight hours we have at this time of year. It`s too cold and wet to skate, so instead I draw and smoke too much, which makes me want to hide more. I can`t sleep at night or wake up for work in the morning. And to make it all worse, I haven`t seen my wife for seven weeks, and she won`t be back for another three... all this stuff in my (numb)skull make me draw these little dudes.
They are all different, though all very alike. They may well be an alphabet which will reveal itself in as the work progresses, or symbols from Inca times, that have survived 2,000 years and spread themselves across the planet. Or they may just be lonely, scared creatures, dwelling in the crack of society, unable to reveal themselves for fear of ridicule, hatred, torture, pain, death. They have evolved well, becoming almost invisible (something I`m still trying myself).
They are the hidden inhabitants of the city. They will not be screaming out at you from roof tops, from billboards, or from stickers on every lampost. They won`t be appearing in the streets that you walk daily, but in the side streets, back alleys, and council estates you hurry past. They will not be searching for work on tv or in the advertising industry, appearing on Nike shoes or cans of Sprite. They will not be chasing fame for themselves or their mother/father/creator(God?) They are what you see when you pick up a piece of wood that has lain on the grass all winter, the spider that makes his home high up on the street light, and the leaf caught in the chain mail fence. They are out there.

open your eyes if you want to see...

or close them and go consume the same stuff as everyone else, the high street, mainstream, dumbed down, sanatized kaka that we lap up like thirsty dogs. Why even bother to try and discover anything about your local area, neighbourhood, culture? Why bother to try and discover anything at all, just surf the channels, everything you need is right there, no?
To make it easier for you to exist in mainstream consumer society, here`s an advertisement from our sponsor. enjoy

These characters / forms are lush..the back streets is all good..we are surrounded by estates and I often wonder if anyone bothers to go strolling down there...Found a wicked set of Toasters off the back of Hoxton St heading away from Old Street!! They were quite high up in the middle of a real dodge looking area..Exploration is the best thing for Street Art...I`d miss my lady too if she was away sooo long!! ..thats enough rambling from me..Take care chap.
