Blast from the past...
All these roman`s ruins have been discovered after the end of the civil war in downtown Beirut, in between the Place de l`Etoile (built during the French Mandate) and the Lazarieh building (from which this picture has been taken). The area was an old and very traditional part of the Ottoman intramuros city. In 1975, at the begining of the war, it was mainly a Souk dedicated to commercial and craftmanship activities. It has been heavily destroyed during the milicians fighting who wanted to control and to pillage the center of the city. Later, it became part of the no man`s land in between East and West Beirut, till the end of the war. Then, when the autority decided to erase the remains of the war and to built almost from scratch a new downtown area, they discovered these roman`s ruins that were hidden and covered by newer constructions since centuries.

no regret on that. I totally agree with the fact symbols could reduce reality, but let`s be clear: some symbols express an specific meaning or, say, historical background. Here, the case. But i think not because nazis use the agrument of Israel the ironyexpressed there isn`t worthy no more. If a nazi use the argument, what`s left then with the "master race"? The is never excuse for what they have done to humanity, but sometimes in a world where there is a brutal lack of information, is needed to operatewith just icons. IT makes me a little uneasy for me to express just in a picture such irony, but maybe you are right. The municipality of Ramal.lah, being aware, I don`t think is justifing the nazis with such permision.

Of course I don`t justify Nazis, but using Israeli`s own propaganda andinvert de meaning to minimalise nazi terror reflects that, in fact, Israel is not a puppy at all. Re : si vous passez à Paris début 2005 et que vous avez 5 mn, faites moi signe, je travaille dans le quartier de l`opéra et que vous veniez pour tourisme familial ou contraintes professionnelles, ça devrait pouvoir se faire de prendre un café ou un verrede bon vin français ensemble.J`apprends grâce à vous la présence de ruines romaines à Beyrouth, depuis que j`ai découvert votre fotolog je me sens moins bête :-) ! merci
